Springfield Town Square

Springfield Town Square: Wild Bill Hickock killed his first man in this square over a gambling debt. It was the only recorded "traditional" gunfight. (You know where the two men stare each other down waiting for the other to draw his gun.) Story goes, both men fired at the same time but Wild Bill had better aim and shot the man in the heart.

Other interesting Springfield facts:
  • The U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners is about 5 minutes from us. Famous past residents include Timothy McVeigh, John Gotti, and "the birdman" of Alcatraz.

  • Other (law abiding) famous Springfield residents include Bob Barker (attended Drury University), Kathleen Turner (hometown), Brad Pitt (graduated from Kickapoo High down the street), and John Goodman (attended MSU).

  • Missouri has the most caves of any other state in the union.

  • Forbes rated Springfield, MO as having the "wildest weather" in the U.S.
